A Donated Car Helps a Ukrainian Family Rebuild Their Lives in New England

Starting Over

In the serene hills of Vermont, Dmytro’s journey is a testament to the profound impact of a simple act of generosity. Once a pediatric doctor in Ukraine, Dmytro’s life was upended by war. Forced to flee with his family, he found hope and a new beginning in the United States. Faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives, one tool in particular would prove critical for his family.

A Vehicle of Hope

Access to transportation is a significant challenge for many refugees and new Americans like Dmytro. According to the International Rescue Committee, refugees often face barriers to transportation, which can limit their access to essential services and opportunities. In rural areas of New England, nearly all employment depends on having access to a car. Thankfully, in April 2023, Good News Garage awarded Dmytro a 2005 Toyota Corolla. This life-changing car was made possible by a generous car donor.

This car was more than just a vehicle; it was a lifeline. It enabled Dmytro to commute to work at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, supporting his family and contributing to his community. Dmytro was a pediatric and family practice doctor in Ukraine. Here in the U.S., he is working diligently to resume his medical career by taking courses and putting in long hours at the hospital.

Impact Beyond Measure

The impact of the car extended beyond Dmytro. His youngest children, ages 8 and 9, could attend primary school and activities more easily, enriching their lives and fostering a sense of belonging in their new home. His oldest child was able to secure a job thanks to the donated car. After working for a while, they bought a car of their own to commute to work and run errands for the family. Eventually, Dmytro purchased a mini-van for his family to use while he commutes to work in his donated Corolla.
