About GNG

What We Do

Good News Garage (GNG) was founded in 1996 as one of the first nonprofit car donation programs in the U.S. Our goal is to repair donated cars, as needed, and award them to individuals and families striving for self-sufficiency.

Over the last 26 years, we have provided over 5,500 New England families with donated vehicles, empowering them to move out of poverty and into financial independence and social stability.

Good News Garage is a win-win solution for donors, clients, and communities. Car recipients are able to move forward in their lives, donors receive free towing and a generous tax deduction (up to fair market value if the car is awarded to a family), local automotive businesses are utilized and communities are strengthened. Unlike most car donation organizations that sell every vehicle and hire a for-profit middleman, Good News Garage allows you to maximize your impact, because our mission is to repair and provide as many cars as possible to local families.

Vehicle donations are accepted from all over New England and eastern New York with free and fast towing/pickup.

How We Help

We have two programs for people in which forward progress is limited by transportation challenges.

Our Wheels to Work program awards refurbished donated cars to residents of Massachusetts and Vermont through state agencies.

We also operate an on-demand shuttle service called Ready To Go. Our team of dispatchers and drivers provides thousands of rides annually so that people can get to work, childcare, medical appointments, and more!

If you are looking for transportation assistance, please read through the information specific to the state in which you live.

Our History

1994: Visionary social activist and Lutheran church member, Hal Colston was working at a Vermont agency when one of his clients, a single mom, came to him in tears. She had just purchased a car, but the car broke down repeatedly, and the seller refused to refund her money. Hal came up with an idea for a “community garage” — a place where people struggling to get out of poverty could find a car that was safe and reliable.
